Virgin Atlantic has postponed introducing its new Airbus A330neo aircraft. The delay, linked to a production issue at Airbus, shifts the start of Heathrow to New York JFK flights to December 5 and pushes the Atlanta launch to March 5, 2027.

The holdup was triggered by a missing tool on an A330 production line. This incident required checks on aircraft and led to a suspension of all A330 deliveries during June and July. Airbus itself has only confirmed discovering an isolated quality issue.

Fleet and route adjustments

The airline has ten of these new A330neos on order. They are configured with a significantly higher proportion of premium seats compared to its existing A330neo fleet. As these new jets arrive, Virgin Atlantic will reduce its Boeing 787-9 fleet from 17 to 14 aircraft.

Polish airline LOT will take two of these 787s during 2027. These are leased aircraft being returned to their owner before being re-leased to LOT. The majority of Virgin's remaining 787s are being retained and are scheduled for a cabin refurbishment by 2030.

New premium cabin specifications

The incoming A330neos are described as 'premium heavy', offering 30 fewer total seats than the current versions to make room for more premium cabins. The seat breakdown highlights the shift in focus.

A key upgrade in Upper Class is a major increase in Retreat Suites. The new layout will feature six of these suites, up from the current two. For the first time, some Retreat Suites will be located by the windows. The report states these suites can be selected for an additional charge of around £300 each way. They offer more space and allow for buddy dining.

Future fleet composition

Once all the new A330neo deliveries are complete, Virgin Atlantic's long-haul fleet will be consolidated. The older A330-300 aircraft are being retired, a process that began in September 2024 and will finish next year. The future fleet will consist of 45 aircraft.

The final lineup will include 12 Airbus A350-1000s, 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, and 19 A330-900neos. This marks a full transition away from the airline's previous generation of A330s.
