American Airlines is launching a new app feature that automates seat selection for its AAdvantage members. The system will automatically move eligible members to a better seat when one matching their preference becomes available, at no additional cost, up to 24 hours before departure.
This feature is available to AAdvantage members who set a seat preference during booking. It is limited to eligible seats within the traveler's confirmed cabin class. The app checks the seat map multiple times and automatically updates the reservation when a better seat opens up. This saves travelers time by eliminating the need for repeated manual checks.
Users stuck in undesirable seats gain automatic access to better options without cost or manual intervention. The feature is currently available for solo travelers. Notifications alert users about any seat changes made on their behalf.
How the technology works
The system continuously monitors seat availability. It automatically reassigns better options that match a user's declared preference for a window, aisle, or middle seat. This happens without any manual input from the traveler and avoids extra selection fees. Eligibility is restricted to AAdvantage members who already have a pre-assigned seat.
Executive endorsement
American Airlines leadership highlights the initiative as a customer-centric innovation driven by AI and early-career technologists. Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden stated that the airline is always looking for ways to make travel easier and more personalized. She described the innovation as proactively addressing customer preference, giving customers more control while asking them to do less.
Chief Digital and Information Officer Ganesh Jayaram said the launch shows what happens when talented technologists are given a meaningful customer problem and space to solve it. He noted that the ADEPT team paired fresh thinking with the scale of experienced teams to build practical technology that removes work from the customer. Jayaram added that the project reflects how AI is being used to help teams work smarter, accelerating development and allowing more focus on innovation.
The feature is part of American's ADEPT program, which recruits early-career technology talent to develop customer-focused solutions. American Airlines operates more than 6,000 daily flights to 350 destinations in 60 countries, transporting over 200 million customers annually. The new system will automatically reassign better seats up to 24 hours before departure, with notifications sent to users about any changes.
