UAE bans Iranian airlines over US sanctions
The UAE has suspended all flights by Iranian carriers to and from the country, effective September 24, citing US secondary sanctions.

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority halted all Iranian civilian aircraft flights to and from the country effective September 24. The suspension was a direct response to new US secondary sanctions. Iran retaliated by shutting its airspace to all UAE-registered aircraft, including those of Emirates, Etihad Airways, and flydubai, escalating a tit-for-tat aviation dispute.
The GCAA confirmed the decision was made in light of a US ban on Iranian airlines using airports worldwide. The halt cites US restrictions that penalize foreign entities aiding sanctioned Iranian carriers. The move was not a unilateral UAE decision to pressure Iran over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran retaliates by closing airspace to UAE carriers
Iran responded to the UAE's ban by closing its own airspace to all UAE-registered aircraft. This action directly impacts the fleets of Emirates, Etihad Airways, and flydubai. The retaliatory measure creates immediate operational challenges for these airlines on routes that typically traverse Iranian airspace.
Impact on UAE airlines and flight operations
Major UAE carriers had already been rerouting flights around Iran since the end of February due to regional tensions. For Emirates and Etihad, this meant no immediate new disruption from the Iranian airspace closure. Their long-haul networks had already adapted to alternate routing.
flydubai faced a more direct impact. The airline had recently begun using Iranian airspace again to shorten flight times on its routes to Russia. The Iranian ban reinstates a longer detour for these services. Travelers on flydubai’s Russia routes will experience longer flight times and potentially higher fares. Airlines may adjust schedules or capacity, which could affect connections and layover durations for passengers transiting through Dubai to Eastern Europe or Central Asia.
Broader context of US sanctions on Iranian aviation
The US secondary sanctions target any entity doing business with designated Iranian airlines. The restrictions include foreign airports selling fuel or providing ground services to carriers like Iran Air and Mahan Air. Countries permitting such business risk exclusion from the US dollar financial system, a consequence the UAE seeks to avoid.
These sanctions aim to cut Iranian airlines off from global support, though they have had little effect on the wider aviation ecosystem. It remains uncertain whether the pressure will alter Tehran's diplomatic stance. The UAE's relationship with Iran is complicated, having previously allowed Iranian airlines to return to Dubai to serve the Iranian diaspora despite regional conflicts.
As the situation stands, the most tangible effect is on specific flight paths. flydubai’s recently resumed direct routes to Russian cities are now extended, with passengers facing longer journeys.
