British Airways has resumed its Starlink Wi-Fi rollout after a nearly four-month pause during the peak summer travel season. The airline halted installations in May to avoid grounding aircraft during high-demand months, but engineering teams are now back at work accelerating the deployment.

British Airways began the Starlink rollout in March 2024. The installation on a widebody aircraft takes around a week before flight testing. Engineering teams are using existing legacy hardware mounts to speed up the process, and the aerodynamics of the new Starlink module are reported to be better than the old systems.

Current installation status across fleet

Starlink is now active on 11 of the airline's 12 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. The airline's 787-8s had never been fitted with a legacy Wi-Fi system, making them a straightforward target for the new technology. Five of these aircraft were fitted before the summer pause.

Six of British Airways' 18 Airbus A350s now also offer the service. On these and other aircraft with older systems, Starlink can be retrofitted into the existing module on top of the aircraft. Specific tail numbers for equipped aircraft have been confirmed by passenger reports.

Travelers on equipped A350 and 787-8 flights now receive free, high-speed connectivity without any need for booking or fees. Passengers are reporting Starlink availability on a growing number of routes.

Future expansion and timeline

The airline is targeting full fleet coverage by March 2028. British Airways said: "British Airways says that it plans to have fully rolled out Starlink across all 300 aircraft in its fleet by March 2028."

Future phases will likely target the airline's Airbus A380 superjumbo fleet during scheduled maintenance and extensive retrofits. This is pending regulatory certification for each airframe type. No public timetable has been released for which remaining aircraft types or specific routes will be affected next.

The airline confirmed the strategic nature of the summer halt. British Airways said: "British Airways later confirmed that the pause was deliberate and had been planned to coincide with the busy summer travel season." British Airways aims to complete Starlink installation across its entire 300-aircraft fleet by March 2028.
