Five airline loyalty programs still provide a route for elite members to receive complimentary upgrades into lie-flat business class seats in 2026. These benefits persist even as many carriers have shifted toward selling premium cabin access.

A small group of programs continues to allow high-level members to move from an economy ticket to a lie-flat seat without a cash co-pay. The airlines are Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, LATAM, and Virgin Australia. Availability is not guaranteed on every flight, but these programs demonstrate the perk has not vanished entirely.

Alaska & Hawaiian: Atmos Rewards Titanium

Alaska Airlines' new Atmos Rewards program offers its highest tier, Titanium, a notable upgrade benefit. Titanium members, who must earn 135,000 status points in 2026, receive complimentary, day-of-departure upgrades into global Business Class for themselves and one companion on eligible Alaska and Hawaiian flights. No points or upgrade certificates are required.

The airline describes this as an upgrade into global Business Class, preserving the chance for a premium long-haul experience. Alaska has positioned itself as the only US airline offering this specific day-of-departure global upgrade without requiring points or a certificate. The upgrade is not guaranteed and depends on available premium inventory and itinerary rules.

Delta Air Lines: SkyMiles Medallion

Delta SkyMiles Medallion members are eligible for unlimited complimentary upgrades to eligible products, including domestic Delta One. This is relevant because select long-haul domestic and transcontinental flights use lie-flat seats.

The benefit is specifically limited to flights within the 50 United States, including Hawaii. A Medallion member cannot expect a complimentary Delta One seat on a flight to Europe. Upgrades may not be available on every flight, and Delta can withhold premium seats from the upgrade pool. For frequent domestic travelers on transcontinental routes, this policy can make Delta status more valuable.

American Airlines: AAdvantage

American Airlines AAdvantage elites retain a route to complimentary business-class upgrades under specific circumstances. The rules allow Main Cabin passengers to upgrade to Business or domestic First on aircraft without Premium Economy. Passengers starting in Premium Economy can also upgrade to Business. The benefit applies to eligible American flights within the US and several nearby international markets.

A policy change effective August 25 introduced restrictions on selected premium domestic and Hawaii routes where Premium Economy is installed. On those aircraft, Main Cabin elites can no longer move directly into Flagship Business through the standard complimentary upgrade process. The path now runs through Premium Economy. Higher-level members can also earn systemwide upgrades through Loyalty Point Rewards, which are separate from the recurring complimentary benefit.

LATAM: LATAM Pass

LATAM Pass provides elite members with a set number of Courtesy Segments for cabin upgrades, covering Premium Economy and lie-flat Premium Business. The allowance increases with status level.

This structure gives LATAM control over the benefit's cost while offering value. Black Signature members can also provide a separate allowance for a companion. Upgrade requests must generally be submitted 48 hours before departure, with the airline displaying the member's position on the upgrade list.

Virgin Australia: Velocity

Virgin Australia's Velocity program provides Platinum members with four complimentary business class upgrade credits annually. These can be used to upgrade from an eligible Economy fare to Business Class on Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights. The airline says the credits are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. This offers a predictable, if limited, annual supply of premium cabin access for the airline's most frequent flyers.
