VINCI Airports and co-shareholder Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) have launched a five-year, £500 million investment programme to transform Edinburgh Airport. This historic capital investment, the largest in the airport's history, aims to increase capacity, improve passenger flows, and strengthen operational performance following a record 2025 that saw almost 17 million passengers.

Rémi Maumon de Longevialle of VINCI Airports stated that the £500m investment shows the group's confidence in the airport's growth prospects and long-term commitment. He noted that Edinburgh has become a strategic airport within the VINCI Airports network. The programme is the first phase of a broader project to ensure the airport can meet demand efficiently and sustainably.

Programme targets increased capacity and improved passenger experience

Terminal improvements form the core of the £500 million programme. Planned projects include a 60 per cent increase in the terminal footprint. Key initiatives focus on enhancing the end-to-end passenger journey.

The expansion of the check-in hall and departure lounge is designed to improve passenger flow and comfort. New and improved retail, food, and beverage areas will offer more choice for passengers.

Investment to strengthen global links and support Scotland’s economy

The planned expansion is expected to enable the development of new air routes and strengthen Scotland's connectivity with Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and other international markets. This supports future long-haul and short-haul growth.

The project aims to enable Edinburgh Airport to play a key role in Scotland's economy. The programme aligns with the airport's Greater Good sustainability strategy. Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, highlighted the economic importance of the development.

"This significant investment will enable Edinburgh Airport to compete with airports around the world," Swinney said.

Sustainability and operational resilience integrated into plans

The investment will support the airport's environmental objectives through upgraded infrastructure and integration of low-carbon solutions aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. Planned works include modernised infrastructure and opportunities to introduce additional low-carbon technologies and initiatives.

The wider airport campus will benefit from expanded electric vehicle charging infrastructure, a new access road, and other supporting improvements to enhance operational resilience and accessibility. These contributions support the airport's long-term sustainability ambitions.

First phase focuses on South East Pier expansion with 2027 completion

The first phase of the massive investment programme centres on the expansion of the South East Pier. This initial development includes new departure gates to support network growth and additional airline services, alongside new retail facilities.

Edinburgh Airport Chief Executive Gordon Dewar was present during a visit to the South East Pier development by First Minister John Swinney. The South East Pier expansion is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.

John Swinney added that alongside delivering real benefits to passengers, this boost will support Scotland’s international connections and help drive economic growth.
