A 36-year-old man climbed over the perimeter fence at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) on Sunday, August 30. He was walking on the grass between the runway and taxiways just before 9:00 AM when he was spotted by a departing flight crew.

Airport personnel quickly intercepted the individual. He was then handed over to Portugal's Public Security Police (PSP). The Portugal Resident reported that the man was later medically assessed in a hospital. A search found he was not carrying a weapon.

Breach Near Active Runway

The incident occurred near Runway 2 at around 8:55 AM. The crew of a departing TAP Air Portugal Airbus A321 saw the man and alerted air traffic control. Initial reports, cited by Aviation Gallery, suggest the individual was walking calmly. It is believed he wanted a 'closer look at airplanes'.

After the alarm was raised, airport officials approached and detained him. Once identified, he was assessed by INEM, the national emergency medical service, and transported to a local hospital. The airport ordered a runway inspection following the incident. No foreign objects or hazards were found.

Security Questions Raised

The breach has ignited discussion about perimeter security at Portugal's busiest airport. Video shows the man, dressed in a light-coloured shirt and dark dress pants, walking peacefully on the grass verge between the runway and aircraft parking aprons. He did not resist when approached by officials.

This case has been referred to Portugal's Public Prosecution Service. It raises questions about how he climbed the fence unnoticed and accessed an active movement area without being spotted sooner. While this individual seemed harmless, the event highlights potential needs for improved intrusion detection services.
