Japan Airlines and British Airways Avios rules explained
Flying with Japan Airlines allows you to earn Avios and British Airways tier points because both airlines are part of the oneworld alliance.

Japan Airlines and British Airways are part of the oneworld alliance. This partnership allows British Airways Club members to earn Avios and tier points when flying on JAL-operated services. Passengers must enter their British Airways Club number when booking or managing their Japan Airlines flights to credit these rewards.
Avios earning rates
Avios earnings vary significantly by fare class on international JAL flights. The base rate is a percentage of miles flown, which is then boosted by any elite status bonus a traveler holds. The same earning rates apply to flights operated by JAL Express, J Air, Japan Transocean, Japan Air Commuter, and Hokkaido Air System.
For Japan Airlines codeshare flights with a JL number but operated by another airline, there are minor changes to earning rates. Domestic routes and non-JAL-operated codeshares have separate earning charts.
| Cabin | Fare Class (Sample) | Avios Earning Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Economy (Lowest) | N, Q, O, G, Z | 25% |
| Economy (Low) | H, K, M, L, V, S | 50%-70% |
| Economy (Flexible) | Y, B | 100% |
| Premium Economy (Lowest) | P | 50% |
| Premium Economy (Low) | E | 100% |
| Premium Economy (Flexible) | W, R | 150% |
| Business (Low) | X | 150% |
| Business (Flexible) | J, C, D, I | 250% |
| First (Low) | A | 250% |
| First (Flexible) | F | 300% |
Elite members receive bonuses on Avios earnings. British Airways Club members earn an Avios tier bonus of 25% for Bronze, 50% for Silver, and 100% for Gold status when flying with Japan Airlines. Avios are credited automatically after completing flights.
Tier points and status
Tier points for JAL flights are low, potentially making other oneworld programs better for status progression. Points are awarded based on distance flown. The accrual rates are modest compared to other partners.
For international flights, tier points are earned at 4% for Economy lowest fares and 60% for flexible First class. Domestic flights have a separate structure, with Business flexible fares earning 50% and First flexible earning 60%. Flexible fares on international first class can earn up to 60% tier points.
Frequent travelers must choose wisely. Missing out on higher accruals could delay elite status or reduce reward value over time. One analysis stated these tier point earning rates are "clearly weak" and suggests another oneworld frequent flyer programme may be better for earning status if flying Japan Airlines regularly.
BA Club integration
BA Club members can add their number to earn Avios and tier points on JAL flights. This is the essential step. Passengers must enter their British Airways Club number to credit Avios and BA tier points.
