SITA Launches Border Flow Lane for Faster Passenger

SITA has launched a new border processing system designed to shift identity checks away from the physical border. The SITA Border Flow Lane solution uses pre-departure data and intelligence to verify travelers before they arrive, transforming immigration into a move-through experience.
For decades, border agencies have focused on three core questions: a traveler's eligibility, identity, and journey details. SITA argues that today, more is known about a passenger before boarding than ever before. If decisions can be made in advance, the company questions why every traveler must still stop to present documents. The new system aims to make physical stops the exception.
Pedro Alves, Senior Vice President of Borders at SITA, linked the innovation to airport capacity challenges. "The aviation industry cannot build its way out of every capacity challenge," Alves said. "Traveler demand changes constantly, but airport infrastructure doesn't. The opportunity is to make better decisions before travelers arrive."
Operational Impact for Stakeholders
The system promises significant changes for different groups involved in the passenger journey. For border officers, the shift is profound. SITA states that more than 75% of travelers can be cleared before departure. This allows officers to focus their attention on the minority of cases requiring closer scrutiny. Authorities retain the full ability to stop any traveler at any point.
For airports and border agencies, the benefit is increased capacity within existing infrastructure. Every traveler who moves through without stopping frees up physical space for the next person. This helps airports accommodate growing passenger numbers without expanding their immigration halls.
The Passenger Experience
For the traveler, the outcome is intended to be straightforward. The goal is less stopping, fewer interruptions, and more time reaching their destination. Processing could be up to eight times faster than using traditional border control eGates. Enrollment is voluntary and uses authorized biometric data chosen by the traveler.
SITA emphasizes that the system is designed to improve throughput without compromising core principles. The company states it ensures efficiency does not come at the expense of trust, security, privacy, traveler choice, or government oversight. Border agencies maintain full control over final identity verification and all border decisions.
A Data-Driven Border Model
Border Flow Lane represents an evolution in digital border management. It is the result of SITA's decades of experience in helping governments use passenger data earlier in the journey. The model leverages years of progress to enable a new operational approach where border decisions increasingly happen before a flight arrives.
