Five Airports Invest Billions To Double Cargo Capacity
Five major global airports are undertaking multi-billion-dollar expansions to more than double their air freight handling capacity by 2030, driven by

Global air freight is undergoing a massive transformation, driven by cross-border e-commerce, shifting manufacturing, and maritime disruptions. In response, five major airport cargo hubs are committing billions to expansion projects designed to double or even quadruple their freight capacity within this decade, moving beyond simple apron extensions to create automated, AI-driven logistics ecosystems.
Punta Cana's Multimodal Ambition
Punta Cana International Airport in the Dominican Republic is investing $200 million to become a global freight node. A joint venture between DP World and Grupo Puntacana's Punta Cana Free Trade Zone aims to boost annual handling capacity from 33,000 short tons to over 220,000 short tons. The project integrates an air cargo terminal with a duty-free industrial park.
A key feature is its multimodal design, linking the airport's apron directly to the deep-water Port of Caucedo. The facility includes 43,000 square feet of temperature-controlled cold storage for perishables like fresh produce and pharmaceuticals. Punta Cana is positioning itself as a transshipment hub, consolidating cargo from South American nations like Colombia and Peru before forwarding it to major European airports. Industry coverage from Air Cargo News suggests this hybrid model could serve as a competitive near-shoring base for the region.
Frankfurt's Technological Overhaul
At Europe's busiest cargo gateway, Lufthansa Cargo is executing a €600 million modernization of its Lufthansa Cargo Center at Frankfurt Airport. The six-year LCCevo masterplan aims to create Europe's most advanced air cargo facility by 2030 across 3.55 million square feet, all while maintaining 24/7 operations.
The first phase, ALPHA, became operational in June 2026. Its centerpiece is a 138-foot-tall automated high-bay warehouse with nearly 3,000 pallet positions. Automated cranes and software enable over 300 storage operations per hour, doubling previous manual rates. A separate automated pallet warehouse is dedicated to temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Lufthansa Cargo CEO Ashwin Bhat stated, "LCCevo is one of the most significant investments in our company's history and a clear commitment to Frankfurt as an air cargo hub."
Shanghai Pudong's Automated Benchmark
Shanghai Pudong International Airport is undergoing a multi-billion-dollar Phase 4 expansion to handle 4.97 million short tons of cargo annually by 2027. The project includes building one of the world's largest satellite cargo facilities, adding 6.67 million square feet of operational space.
China Eastern Air Logistics has deployed advanced automation in its Cargo Terminal 4. Specialist Lödige Industries supplied six automated guided vehicles, each capable of carrying unit loads weighing up to 7.5 short tons autonomously. These vehicles integrate with a lift-and-run storage concept and data management software for real-time tracking, setting a new global benchmark for automated airside handling.
Istanbul's Strategic Expansion
Turkish Airlines is investing over 100 billion Turkish Lira ($2.3 billion) to expand its hub at Istanbul Airport. The centerpiece is Phase 2 of the SmartIST cargo terminal, which will more than double annual capacity from 2.42 million to 4.96 million short tons. The expansion will bring the terminal's footprint to 3.98 million square feet, among the largest globally.
To manage the increased volume, Turkish Cargo has also contracted Lödige Industries to equip the expanded terminal with advanced automation systems. The airport's strategic location between East and West is central to its growth plans.
Comparative Expansion Projects
The scale of investment and projected capacity gains across these five hubs are detailed below.
| Airport | Investment | Current Capacity (short tons) | Target Capacity (short tons) | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Punta Cana (PUJ) | $200 million | 33,000 | 220,000+ | Multimodal air-sea link |
| Frankfurt (FRA) | €600 million | Not specified | Not specified | Automated high-bay warehouse |
| Shanghai Pudong (PVG) | Multi-billion | Not specified | 4.97 million | Heavy-lift automated vehicles |
| Istanbul (IST) | $2.3 billion | 2.42 million | 4.96 million | SmartIST terminal expansion |
These projects represent a fundamental reimagining of airport cargo infrastructure, focusing on automation, specialized storage, and seamless multimodal connections to capture future trade flows.
