Etihad to Renovate Heathrow Lounge with New Global Design

Etihad Airways will renovate its London Heathrow premium lounge as the first location for its new 'Beyond Borders' design concept, part of a wider $1

Etihad Airways will open a newly renovated premium lounge at London Heathrow Airport in Summer 2027. The lounge will be the first to feature the airline's new global 'Beyond Borders' design concept.

According to the airline's chief revenue and commercial officer, Arik De, the Heathrow project marks the start of a major redevelopment of its lounge network. "Our new lounges are an important part of the Etihad experience, and London Heathrow marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter," De said. He explained the lounge would create a space that feels uniquely connected to Abu Dhabi.

The Beyond Borders Design Ethos

The new design language, called 'Beyond Borders,' was first unveiled on Etihad's new Airbus A330neo aircraft cabins. The concept is now being extended to the airline's ground facilities. De stated the thinking is that guests should recognise the same Etihad identity throughout their journey, from the airport lounge to the aircraft cabin.

Inspiration for the design is drawn from the United Arab Emirates' landscape and architecture. Etihad describes it as moving "from sand to superstructure," referencing both natural desert elements and Abu Dhabi's modern skyscrapers.

Heathrow Lounge Features and Rollout

The renovated London Heathrow lounge will include several new areas. A custom-designed bar, redesigned communal seating, and a show-stopper lobby are planned. A separate wing will be dedicated to First Class and The Residence passengers, with private suites for the latter.

While the design ethos connects lounges and aircraft cabins, De clarified they will not look identical. Instead, the spaces will share familiar touchpoints in design, hospitality, dining, wellbeing, and service to create a cohesive brand experience.

Financial Backing and Brand Repositioning

The lounge renovation is part of a broader investment by Etihad. The airline is spending $20 billion on new aircraft, cabins, and passenger experience enhancements. An additional $1 billion is allocated to retrofit older aircraft with the latest products and designs.

This investment supports CEO Antonoaldo Neves's strategy to reposition Etihad as an ultra-premium carrier. The move follows a period of financial recovery for the airline, which returned to profitability after a turnaround program led by former CEO Tony Douglas.

The Heathrow lounge renovation is the first step in a global rollout of the Beyond Borders concept to other premium lounges in Etihad's network.
