United Airlines will launch its shortest nonstop route to Europe in 2027. The new flight will connect Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with Lajes (TER) on Terceira Island in the Azores.

The eastbound leg will have a block time as low as five hours and 15 minutes. This makes it the carrier's shortest European route by both distance and time. United announced the route on Tuesday as part of a wider European network expansion.

Operations are scheduled to begin on June 9, 2027. Flights will operate three times weekly using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. With this launch, United will become the only US-based airline offering nonstop service to Lajes.

Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, commented on the expansion. "Whether it's a business trip, a dream honeymoon, a bucket-list adventure, or a trip home to see family, we're making the world feel smaller and connecting cultures at a scale no other airline can match," he stated.

US-Azores Route Performance

Data from aviation analytics company Cirium shows existing US-Azores routes tend to perform well. The figures cover the 12 months to May 2026.

Azores Airlines operates four routes between the US and the Azores. Their performance data is shown below.
