The Brest Area Control Centre in France has gone live with a new voice communication system, supplied by Frequentis and the French air navigation service provider Direction des Services de la Navigation Aérienne (DSNA). The system, which received formal approval from the French Civil Aviation Authority in April 2025, replaces the legacy ARTEMIS system that had been in use for nearly 30 years.
According to Reinhard Grimm, Executive Vice President ATM at Frequentis, the successful commissioning of the voice communication system demonstrates the strength of the partnership between Frequentis and DSNA, and their commitment to dependable, safety-critical solutions. The new system supports more flexible and reliable air traffic management across France and Europe.
Air Traffic Management
The new voice communication system is part of the Functional Airspace Block Europe Central (FABEC) voice communication system programme, developed in cooperation with EUROCONTROL's Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC). Frequentis supplied its VCS3020X system, tailored to meet DSNA's requirements. The system offers improved communication continuity and a strong and resilient communication solution, supporting airspace management during varying traffic conditions.
Functional Airspace Block Europe Central
The Functional Airspace Block Europe Central (FABEC) is a cooperation platform that aims to achieve optimal performance in areas such as safety, environmental sustainability, and cost-efficiency. It covers the lower and upper airspaces of six states, including Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The airspace is one of the busiest and most complex in the world, with many large European airports and major civil airways and military zones located in the area.
