Qatar Airways is accepting new Boeing 787-9 aircraft without its famous Qsuite business class. Instead, the jets feature a business cabin based on the Adient Aerospace Ascent seat, which is narrower and lighter.

According to the airline's Global Communications and Media Relations team, the 787-9 business class is designed to deliver an raise experience combining privacy and comfort. The carrier told Simple Flying it continues to invest in enhancing the customer experience across its fleet.

The 787-9 Business Class Configuration

The Boeing 787-9 features a business class cabin with 30 suites in a 1-2-1 configuration, each offering direct aisle access and privacy doors. The product includes lie-flat beds, wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity, high-power USB-C charging ports, customizable in-suite lighting, and electro-dimmable windows.

The Ascent seats are arranged in a herringbone layout with a 48-inch privacy door. Qatar Airways was the launch customer for this seat, which is now used by several other airlines. The seat's narrower design is necessitated by the 787's fuselage, which is 18 feet wide. For comparison, the Airbus A350, which typically carries Qsuites, has a cabin width of 18 feet, 5 inches. This slight difference means installing the bulkier Qsuite on the 787 would result in very narrow aisles. The lighter Ascent seat also contributes to fuel savings.

Origins of the Ascent Seat

The Ascent business class seat first arrived on the market in June 2021. It was a disruptive product from Adient Aerospace, a company formed in partnership with Boeing that had previously specialized in luxury automotive seating. Since April 2025, the seating brand has been known as Raise Aircraft Seating.

Trystan Parry, Vice President of Sales & Product Support, told The Design Air that the brand use automotive craftsmanship standards. "Craftsmanship is the process we employ to improve the quality and value of the product," he said, describing the goal of providing a harmonious surface for the passenger experience.

The Qsuite Guarantee Policy

Qatar Airways acknowledges the Ascent product is not equivalent to its Qsuite. To compensate passengers, the airline offers a 'Qsuite Guarantee'. This policy applies if a passenger books a Qsuite ticket but is switched to a different aircraft, such as a new 787-9, due to an operational change.

The guarantee allows for a free date or flight change to get onto a Qsuite-equipped aircraft, provided the new flight is on the same route and departs within 21 days of the original booking. The policy covers tickets booked with cash or Avios points, but only for itineraries issued directly on Qatar Airways ticket stock for its own flights; partner airline bookings do not qualify.

Comparing the Business Class Products

The Qsuite guarantee exists due to significant differences between the products. The most obvious is width, with the Ascent seat being narrower to fit the 787's cabin. Qsuite, used on the wider Boeing 777 and Airbus A350, also features higher doors and dividers, offering more privacy.

Qsuite provides more storage and customization options. It has larger personal storage compartments and a large side table. Its configuration is also more flexible, allowing solo travelers, couples, or groups of four to book tailored suite arrangements.

Both products share some amenities. They operate on a dine-on-demand concept with identical menus and proper cutlery. The level of service, bedding, amenities, and The White Company loungewear are also the same across both cabins.

The Future of Qsuite

The gap between the products may widen with the planned introduction of Qsuite Next Gen. This evolved product aims to create a boutique hotel experience in the sky, featuring a private suite with a door and higher, digitally controlled dividers customizable via a touchscreen.

Initially slated for the Boeing 777X, certification delays have led Qatar Airways to plan its introduction on the Airbus A350 instead. The new generation will include a Companion Suite for couples at window seats and an improved Quad Suite. All suites will be paired with Starlink Wi-Fi for high-speed connectivity.
