Jetstar has completed a trial flight at the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI). The airline's first commercial passenger flight from the airport is scheduled for October 25, 2026.

An Airbus A320 operated the test landing on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The flight was conducted in partnership with the WSI team to rehearse the end-to-end passenger experience. Jetstar aims to ensure smooth operations from the airport's opening day.

Chief Pilot on Milestone Test

Jetstar Chief Pilot Tyrone Simes called the event a major milestone. "Australia hasn't opened a major new airport like this in more than 50 years, so this morning was a genuinely exciting milestone for me and the team," he said, according to the source report.

Simes explained the rationale for the early test. The eight-week lead time allows the airline to integrate lessons learned into its procedures and crew briefings. The goal is to have every element fully tested and refined before the launch.

Simulating the Passenger Journey

The trial focused on familiarizing the crew with the new airport's layout and procedures. Pilots flew the planned arrival and departure routes exactly as they will in October. The crew also practiced the ground operation, including the taxi route to the gate, aligning with the aerobridge, and completing a full aircraft turnaround.

"By the time we carry our first customers from Western Sydney, every element of this operation will be familiar to us," Simes stated. The airline's inaugural passenger flight, JQ362 to the Gold Coast, is set for an 11:00 departure on Sunday, October 25.

Initial Flight Schedule

From the opening day, Jetstar will operate a network of domestic routes from Western Sydney International Airport using its Airbus A320 fleet. The initial schedule includes increased frequency on some routes compared to previous plans.

Jetstar will become the first airline to fly passengers from the new Western Sydney airport. The company says it is looking forward to sharing the first flight with its customers.
