Fort Wayne International Airport Completes Multi-Year Modernisation Initiative
The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority marked the finish of Project Gateway with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighting extensive terminal upgrades and campus-wide improvements aimed at enhancing passenger experience and supporting regional growth.
The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority celebrated the conclusion of Project Gateway, a multi-year investment that modernised Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA). A ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together community leaders, project partners and elected officials to recognise the terminal expansion and renovation. ## Officials Praise the New Gateway Regional Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Rebecca MacPherson, U.S. Representative Marlin Stutzman, Allen County Commissioner Ron Turpin, Fort Wayne Deputy Mayor Karl Bandemer and Airport Authority CEO Scott Hinderman all delivered remarks. Hinderman emphasized that the milestone represents more than a construction finish, describing the project as a commitment to delivering an "exceptional experience" for travelers and positioning the airport as a "gateway" that reflects the region’s strength and momentum. ## Scope of Project Gateway The programme, named for its role as the region’s new entry point, began after FWA recorded ten straight years of passenger growth. It encompassed a series of infrastructure upgrades across the airport campus, including a Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project, an expanded canopy over the rental-car return lot, a renewable solar energy installation, and apron improvements on both the east and west sides of the terminal. ## West Terminal Expansion and Rehabilitation Completed in 2023, the West Terminal Expansion added several passenger-focused amenities. New airline ticketing counters, a modern baggage handling system and two extra gates equipped with boarding bridges were introduced. The project also created a children’s play area, a multi-sensory room, a mother’s room, and refreshed the terminal’s façade and interior design. ## East Terminal Expansion Finalises the Transformation Work on the East Terminal began in 2023 and concluded the airport’s comprehensive overhaul. Key features include relocated aircraft gates and boarding bridges, an enlarged TSA security checkpoint, additional restrooms and mother’s rooms, and a dedicated service-animal relief area. Accessibility improvements were expanded, and a new "meeter and greeter" space was added to streamline passenger flow. Upgraded building systems support a new frequent-flyer lounge, while operational changes increase the separation between aircraft taxiways and the terminal building, boosting both safety and efficiency. ## Looking Ahead With the completion of Project Gateway, FWA now offers a modernised terminal environment designed to improve the passenger journey and accommodate future growth. The airport authority highlighted that the enhancements not only elevate traveler comfort but also lay the groundwork for continued economic development in Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana. The ceremony underscored the collaborative effort among federal, state and local stakeholders that made the project possible, signalling a shared commitment to the airport’s role as a vital regional hub.
