Gebr Heinemann has extended its partnership with Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). The new contract sets the stage for a major expansion of the duty-free and travel value shopping area located behind security in Terminal 1. You can find related commercial data in our stats section.

According to the source, the retail space will grow to approximately 3,800 square metres. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028 and will be executed in multiple construction phases.

Market Place Redesign

The expansion is part of a broader redesign of the airport's market place. The goal is to create a more attractive, convenient, and experience-driven environment for international passengers, similar to how a team's squad composition shapes its performance.

The new area will combine an expanded shopping offer with a food and beverage section. A key feature will be its direct view of the aircraft apron, allowing travellers to watch airport operations.

Airport CEO Aletta von Massenbach stated the airport is investing in the future with this project. "By way of the redesign, we are creating more space for people to linger, expanding the range of facilities for passengers and opening up the area more towards the apron," she said.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

The airport plans further enhancements to strengthen the market place's role. It is intended to become a central point of orientation and a vibrant hub for passengers transiting through BER.

Steffen Jopp, managing director of Gebr Heinemann at BER, highlighted the opportunities the extra space provides. "The expanded space will allow us to introduce new concepts and create a more inviting atmosphere that encourages travelers to spend time in the market place," Jopp said.

He noted that new retail areas will be complemented by food and beverage options. This combination aims to create a more enjoyable experience for all passenger groups.

Project Ambition and Timeline

The initiative highlights the shared ambition of Heinemann and Berlin Brandenburg Airport. They seek to noticeably enhance the overall travel experience at BER, aiming for a top position in passenger satisfaction much like a club targets the top of the standings.

Von Massenbach emphasized that the redesign creates a unique area. It combines shopping, restaurants, and the direct airport experience into one attractive space.

The transformation will be carried out in several stages. All work is slated to finish by the end of 2028.
